Question 1

What is a word counter?

Accepted Answer

A tool that counts the words, characters, sentences and paragraphs in a piece of text, and estimates how long it takes to read.

Question 2

Does the word count include punctuation?

Accepted Answer

Punctuation attached to a word does not create an extra word. Numbers count as words; standalone symbols usually do not.

Question 3

What is the difference between words and characters?

Accepted Answer

Words are separated by spaces; characters include every letter, space and punctuation mark. Character counts include spaces unless stated otherwise — this tool shows both.

Question 4

Is my text uploaded to a server?

Accepted Answer

No. Counting runs locally in your browser and your text is never stored or sent anywhere.

Question 5

Is the tool free?

Accepted Answer

Yes, completely free with no sign-up.

Question 6

What does the word counter show?

Accepted Answer

Words, characters with spaces, characters without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and estimated reading time — all updating live as you type.
